Newborn Care Q & A

What happens during newborn care visits?

Your baby will receive their first newborn care checkup in the moments after birth. This exam determines your baby’s length and weight, reflexes, breathing function, and checks for an overall healthy appearance.

Once you head home with your infant, you’ll begin working closely with a pediatrician to ensure your baby receives proper newborn care. The initial visit might take place during the first week after birth and includes vaccinations, a weight check, and metabolic screening.

From this point forward, your pediatric team will advise you on when to come in for routine newborn care visits. During each visit, your child’s development is checked and compared against statistics from other babies of the same sex and age.

How often should I come in for newborn care visits?

The American Academy of Pediatrics has a recommended schedule for routine infant health visits, which are also called well-child exams. Your schedule will likely resemble visits as follows:

  • 1 week
  • 2 weeks
  • 1 month
  • 2 months
  • 4 months
  • 6 months
  • 9 months
  • 12 months
  • 15 months
  • 18 months
  • 2 years

After your child reaches two years of age, annual well-child exams are usually all that’s needed to stay healthy and happy. If your little one has a chronic health problem or developmental issues, more frequent visits might be needed.

What can I expect during newborn care visits?

The initial part of the visit involves gathering basic health data, such as length, weight, heart and breathing function, and skin condition. Dr. Etienne reviews your baby’s immunization schedule during each visit and administers the vaccines needed to protect against serious illness.

You’ll also have plenty of time to discuss any concerns you have about your child’s development or health. Each family is unique, and no topics are off-limits. Some of the issues you might discuss include:

  • Feeding schedules
  • Sleep habits
  • Childproofing methods
  • Bonding with older children
  • Postpartum concerns
  • Healthy stimulation and play

Never hesitate to reach out to the Optimum Medical team with any questions or concerns. Dr. Etienne and his staff are here to help and are happy to provide the information you need to help your little one thrive.
