Asthma Q & A

What is asthma?

Asthma is a chronic lung condition characterized by inflamed or narrowed airways. People with asthma have a hard time getting enough air into their lungs, especially during flare-ups or asthma attacks.

Many people develop asthma symptoms during childhood. Though there is no clear cause of asthma, researchers believe a combination of genetic and environmental factors is to blame.

Asthma occurs when your body overreacts to substances that are not usually harmful to humans. Substances that trigger these reactions are called allergens, and exposure to one or more allergens can cause a swift immune response that includes swelling within your airways.

How do I know if my child has asthma?

Understanding the symptoms of asthma can make it easier to know when to bring your child in for a diagnostic appointment. Some of the symptoms of childhood asthma include:

  • Whistling or wheezing sounds during exhalation
  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest tightness or congestion
  • Frequent coughing that worsens at night, during exercise, or when sick
  • Fatigue
  • Sleep disruptions

Even though all children experience some of the symptoms from time to time, kids with asthma struggle with these challenges on a regular basis, and the intensity of symptoms can rise and fall.

Are there treatments that can help kids with asthma?

Dr. Etienne performs a thorough diagnostic workup to determine if your child has asthma or another condition that is causing their symptoms. If your child is diagnosed with asthma, a customized treatment plan is designed to suit their specific set of needs.

Identifying asthma triggers is a key to reducing attacks. Some kids react strongly to environmental triggers like smoke or pollen, while others react to pet dander, foods, or household chemicals. Once you know which substances trigger asthma symptoms, taking steps to avoid exposure can dramatically improve your child’s quality of life.

Medications might play a role in your child’s treatment plan. Some drugs deliver immediate effects, while others work on a longer-term basis. There are medications that reduce inflammation in the airways, and others that change the immune response.

It often takes a period of trial and error to find the right drug therapy for childhood asthma. You’ll have the support of the entire Optimum Medical team as you move through the treatment process.
